Being someone who loves to paint and transform things for the better, I came across The Real Milk Paint Co. and immediately wanted to try out some of their paint because it is eco-friendly, and so easy to use!
What’s Milk Paint?
Milk paint is 100% natural and is an environmentally friendly alternative to commercial paints on the market. Milk paint has whole ingredients like milk protein, lime and earth pigments for color. Milk paint lasts for years to come and is such a better option than other paints that contain harmful ingredients.
Since Milk Paint is eco-friendly, non-toxic, and made from the Earth, it can safely be disposed of by being sprinkled over compost in your own back yard. What other furniture paint can you do that with?! Since getting the opportunity to try out some Milk Paint for myself, I thought I would show you guys my most recent Milk Paint project! It turned out beautiful!
Here is the before photo of my dresser that needed a makeover. Since moving into a new home with my husband in February, I decided I wanted all of my furniture to be white or light shades of gray. This dresser was a warm cream, so the color had to go! Let’s take a look at the simple process of painting with Milk Paint.
Prep Work
I got the dresser ready by scrubbing it down and sanding off all of the old paint with an electric sander. It took a couple of hours total, but sanding the surface makes the wood more porous and helps with the durability of the paint. I then laid down a plastic tarp in my dining room and pulled out all of the drawers to individually paint. Yes, I painted indoors because again, Milk Paint is safe, fume-free, and safe to use indoors!
Let’s Get To Painting!
Out of all the huge selection of colors The Real Milk Paint Co. has, I went with the beautifully light, crisp gray color called “Pearl”. I chose this color because it was the perfect shade of grey that is almost white, which goes perfectly with my home.
Mixing the Milk Paint is super easy. The paint comes in a can that has a mable (a literal glass marble that helps mix the paint) and a bag of grey powdered pigment tightly sealed inside of a plastic bag.
All you have to do is mix one part of the powder with one part water, seal the lid back up, then start shaking, shaking, shaking! It’s super important to mix it all together for that perfect consistency.
Once the paint is all mixed up, it’s super important to let it sit for a few minutes before using to let it all settle and become the perfect consistency. Now it’s time to get to painting!
The Milk Paint has a nice, light texture that goes on super smooth. It is very opaque so I only had to use one coat of paint on the dresser. It took me around 2 hours to paint the dresser and all six drawers.
Before resembling that dresser, I let the drawers dry overnight to ensure all of the paint had completely dried.
And the Finished Result:
The dresser turned out absolutely beautiful! Milk Paint is honestly so simple to use and completely brought back some life to my old dresser. I love the super matte finish of the paint and how durable it feels.
